MSI has unveiled its latest enthusiast-grade motherboard, the MAG X870E TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI PZ, designed for AMD’s AM5 platform. Featuring a sleek silver-gray design, robust overclocking capabilities, and an efficient rear-connector layout, this motherboard is one of the most feature-packed models in MSI’s MAG series.

At the heart of this motherboard is the OC Engine external clock generator, which allows for precise frequency control of Ryzen processors. Built on an 8-layer, 2 oz copper PCB, it features a 14+2+1 phase power system powered by 80A Smart Power Stage (SPS) DrMOS units. Dual EPS 8-pin CPU connectors ensure stable power delivery, while a 7W/m·K thermal pad and EZ Debug LED system help maintain optimal temperatures and simplify troubleshooting.

The X870E TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI PZ provides excellent expansion options with three full-length PCIe slots:

  • PCIe 5.0 x16 directly connected to the CPU
  • PCIe 4.0 x4
  • PCIe 3.0 x1 from the chipset

Storage connectivity includes four M.2 NVMe slots (two PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0) and four SATA III 6 Gbps ports. One of the PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots shares bandwidth with the USB4 rear port, emphasizing MSI’s integrated approach to high-speed data transfer.

Memory and Network

This motherboard supports up to 192 GB of DDR5 memory at speeds of up to 8400 MT/s when paired with AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPUs. Networking is equally advanced, with a Realtek RTL8126 5GbE Ethernet controller and Wi-Fi 7 on a 320 MHz channel, alongside Bluetooth 5.4 support.

Rear I/O Features

The rear I/O is designed for high-performance setups and includes:

  • Two USB4 40 Gbps ports with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode support
  • HDMI 2.1 FRL output
  • Several USB-A 10 Gbps and 5 Gbps ports
  • USB-C 10 Gbps interface
  • Audio handled by Realtek ALC4080 codec with analog, digital, and S/PDIF-out options

With its combination of high-speed connectivity, robust power delivery, and advanced cooling solutions, the MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI PZ stands out as a top choice for enthusiasts building an AMD AM5 system.
